I rarely read newspapers the way I used to.

Most days I skim headlines, glance at the first paragraph, and move on.

That may sound irresponsible, but modern news is often structured in a way that makes deep reading almost unnecessary. The headline tells you the story. The first paragraph tells you the angle. Everything afterward is usually detail.

The other day, while scrolling through the news, I came across a headline about the upcoming 250th anniversary celebration of the United States.

I do not know all the details behind the story. Perhaps there is more context. Perhaps there are performers I did not see mentioned. But the article appeared in a serious newspaper, so I assume the basic facts were correct.

What caught my attention was the lineup.

An Anthropological Visit to a Bakery

There are two bakeries near where I live.

The first one is deeply, profoundly Swiss.

Not the products. The products are perfectly fine. Bread is bread. Gipfeli are Gipfeli. No, what is truly Swiss is the atmosphere.

You can walk into this bakery ninety-nine times and still feel vaguely like an administrative irregularity.

The interaction is always correct. Polite. Efficient. Emotionally refrigerated.

But there remains an invisible question floating in the air: “Why exactly are you here?”

Perhaps after the hundredth visit, if all social protocols have been properly respected and no excessive spontaneity has occurred, you slowly rise to the social category of “recognized bread purchaser.”

Social integration remains a thirty-year project.

Understanding Is the Booby Prize

One of the most famous lines to come out of est was this:

"Understanding is the booby prize."

The first time I heard it, I disliked it.

As someone with a master's degree in philosophy, understanding seemed to be precisely the point. Universities are built around understanding. Books are written to increase understanding. Entire careers are devoted to understanding.

Yet the older I get, and the longer I work as a social worker, the more I suspect Erhard was pointing at something important.

Not because understanding is worthless.

Because understanding is often where people stop.

The Swedish Backpack

This morning I had an argument with my daughter over a backpack.

No family crisis.

Just one of those ordinary domestic conflicts that seem almost ridiculous from the outside and strangely important from the inside.

My daughter was preparing for a school hiking trip. We were already under time pressure. I had packed everything before she woke up in what I considered the most practical way possible.

The backpack in question was one her mother had bought for her in Sweden. One of those Fjällräven-style Scandinavian backpacks. Not exactly the classic rigid school version, but a more modern variation of the original design. Similar shape, slightly more casual and versatile.

The important thing for me was this: it was already her everyday backpack.

She used it every day for school. She knew exactly where everything was.

The emergency phone. The hay fever medication. The tissue paper. The plaster. All the small practical things children suddenly need when adults are not immediately beside them.

Of course there were teachers on the hiking trip. It was not about survival in the wilderness.

It was about familiarity.

We Already Know

Modern society behaves as if human beings mainly suffer from lack of information.

If people smoke, they need education.

If children become aggressive, they need prevention workshops.

If society becomes unhealthy, polarized or dysfunctional, we need more awareness campaigns, more communication, more informational material, more explanations.

But the strange thing is:

most people already know far more than they actually live.

The smoker knows smoking is bad.

The exhausted office worker knows sleep matters.

People know junk food is unhealthy.

People know endless doomscrolling destroys attention.

People know dating apps are often psychologically corrosive.

People know social media manipulates them.

People know pornography can distort sexuality.

People know constant passive consumption leaves them numb.

The informational layer already exists.

And yet behavior continues.

Forced to Spend the Afternoon at the Public Pool

This is not satire. This actually happened.

A Swiss newspaper recently reported on citizens complaining that they had to wait up to two hours to enter a public swimming pool.

For international readers, this requires a small cultural translation.

In Switzerland, public outdoor pools are a major summer institution. They are called “Badis,” a Swiss-German nickname for municipal swimming pools. Almost every second village has one. And if one pool is overcrowded, you can usually drive fifteen or twenty minutes and find another one. Or a lake. Or a river. Or some absurdly beautiful mountain stream that looks almost offensively idyllic.

In other words: this was not scarcity.

This was convergence.

Thousands of people independently decided that they absolutely needed to spend the afternoon at the exact same public pool at the exact same time as everybody else.

Then they encountered the physical consequences of all making the same decision simultaneously and experienced this as oppression.

“We had to wait two hours.”

Had to.

Vendor Locked-In

Organizations talk a lot about vendor lock-in.

A government becomes dependent on Microsoft.

A company builds its entire infrastructure around Amazon.

A university cannot leave Google because every workflow, archive, communication structure and authentication layer now depends on it.

Technically they are free to leave.

Practically they are trapped.

Because the problem is not the software itself.

The problem is the switching cost.

Everything slowly grows around the system:

habits,

workflows,

dependencies,

training,

identity,

infrastructure.

At some point leaving becomes so painful that people stop seriously imagining it.

And I increasingly suspect human beings are far more vendor locked-in than institutions.

The American Presidency as Content

Something is seriously wrong with the American presidency.

Not just politically. Psychologically.

One president appeared on television like a disoriented nursing-home resident who had accidentally been handed the nuclear codes.

And the next behaves like a permanently online casino owner with a severe gambling addiction who somehow ended up running a world empire.

AI images. Aliens in chains. Messiah fantasies. Superhero nonsense. Endless posting. Endless chaos. Endless stimulation.

And the truly insane part is: people are already getting used to it.

That is the real frightening story.

TikTok Planet

Something enormous is happening to human beings.

Not politically. Not economically. Anthropologically.

The species itself is being rewired by systems of continuous engagement.

And the strange thing is that most people barely notice it because the process arrives disguised as convenience, entertainment, personalization and connection.

The internet was only the beginning.

At first technology looked like a tool. Then it became an environment. Now it is becoming a nervous system.

Not artificial intelligence replacing humanity.

Something stranger: human consciousness itself reorganizing around permanent stimulation.

The colonization of consciousness.

Scrolling Without a Phone

I recently went to a shopping center with my daughter and saw something so strange that I immediately thought:

there is an essay in this.

In the middle of the mall stood huge metal cages filled with unopened return packages. According the shop assistant, they were from Amazon.

A yellow sign explained the concept: you buy the packages by weight without knowing what is inside.

That was the entire business model.

People were digging through the parcels almost feverishly.

My daughter wanted me to buy one.

Usually I am not overly strict about small things like this, but this time I immediately drew the line.

I told her: “If you want one, you are welcome to buy it with your own saved money. But I’m not paying for this.”

That changed the atmosphere instantly.

The Dialectic of Attention

Hegel believed history moved through contradictions in consciousness.

Marx believed history moved through contradictions in material production.

Both still lived in worlds where human attention itself remained relatively untouched.

Our age is different.

The central resource of modern civilization is no longer merely labor.

It is attention.

And once attention becomes economically extractable, the structure of society changes completely.

Industrial civilization organized bodies.

The emerging order colonizes nervous systems.

That is the real historical break.

The Loop

The philosopher Werner Erhard once used the word “distinction” in an interesting way.

Not as a synonym for intelligence or clever terminology, but as a shift in perception.

A distinction is when two things that previously felt fused together suddenly separate in your mind.

Before the distinction, they appear identical.

Afterward, you can see space between them.

For example:

Many people experience criticism and rejection as the same thing.

Then one day they realize:

Criticism is information.

Rejection is the meaning I attach to it.

Questions and Answers

I was listening to Werner Erhard speak the other day.

Or rather, half listening.

That always happens to me with certain thinkers. I stop the recording every few minutes because my own thoughts begin branching off somewhere else. McLuhan supposedly read books like that. One paragraph would trigger an entire chain reaction and the book itself almost became secondary.

Something similar happened here.

Erhard was talking about answers and questions. I’m paraphrasing badly now, but the basic feeling was this: people are obsessed with finding answers because answers create closure. They stabilize the world. They reduce uncertainty.

And I suddenly realized how much of my own life operates that way.

Not only professionally as a social worker in Switzerland, where everybody wants certainty all the time.

Clients want the answer. Superiors want the answer. Institutions want the answer.

What is the correct intervention? What is the proper strategy? What is the best framework?

But I noticed the same machinery operating quietly inside my private life too.

The Dialectic of Veganism

I bought a vegan protein powder recently.

Not because I suddenly became vegan. I simply wanted to try it. The package looked clean, modern, vaguely rebellious in the way contemporary wellness branding always tries to look rebellious.

“Peak Punk.”

Which is already funny if you think about it for more than three seconds.

Punk once meant cigarettes, heroin, cheap beer and self-destruction.

Now it means organic sunflower protein optimized for gut health.

But what interested me was something else.

For years I had heard people talking about whey protein without ever thinking much about what whey actually was. Then I realized: whey is basically milk protein.

That’s all.

And suddenly I found myself thinking: wait a second. So the entire distinction here is about milk?

That small realization unexpectedly opened a much larger philosophical question.

Because veganism only looks simple if you isolate it from the gigantic civilizational machinery underneath it.

At the moral level, the vegan argument is understandable: reduce animal suffering, reduce cruelty, reduce industrial exploitation of living creatures.

Fine.

But then the Hegelian question begins.

Social Work as an Art

I was reading about Bismarck recently and came across a line that stayed with me.

Politics, he said, is less a science than an art. It is not a subject that can be taught. One must have the talent for it.

And the more I thought about it, the more I realized the same may be true for social work.

After many years working with clients and observing colleagues, I have seen people without formal education in social work sometimes perform far better than people with master’s degrees and endless theoretical vocabulary.

That is not an argument against education. Theory matters. Knowledge matters. Experience matters.

But there seems to be another dimension that cannot simply be downloaded through books or seminars.

What Is Freedom For?

For centuries, Western civilization fought to liberate the individual.

From kings. From churches. From rigid morality. From inherited roles. From limitation itself.

And much of that liberation was real progress.

People gained freedoms earlier generations could barely imagine: freedom of thought, sexual freedom, personal autonomy, mobility, self-expression, protection from arbitrary authority, the right to shape one’s own life.

The modern individual became sovereign.

But somewhere along the way civilization stopped asking a dangerous question:

What is freedom actually for?

Because freedom, by itself, does not build civilizations.

Why Continue?

For decades, modern Western society operated on a powerful assumption: human beings are unhappy because they are constrained.

Too many rules. Too much repression. Too much tradition. Too much limitation.

So the walls came down.

The culture became richer, freer, more individualized, and more psychologically experimental than any civilization before it. Entire generations began treating consciousness itself as a project.

The West became wealthier. Freer. More expressive.

But modernity discovered something psychologically uncomfortable:

human desire adapts faster than satisfaction.

The self becomes a permanent project.

Heal yourself. Optimize yourself. Express yourself. Discover yourself. Reinvent yourself.

The process never ends because the horizon keeps retreating.

And now another consequence quietly appears.

This Is It

A woman in a book from the 1970s describes the strange exhaustion of her generation.

She had done everything.

Psychoanalysis. Meditation. Encounter groups. Transactional analysis. Gestalt therapy. Guided LSD trips. Silva Mind Control. A forty-day ARICA training. She even ran naked in a marathon somewhere along the way.

Around her, America was doing the same thing on a larger scale.

The country became richer. Freer. More psychologically expressive. More sexually liberated. More experimental.

Old authorities collapsed. Rules were broken. Structures dissolved. Walls came down everywhere.

And for a while it felt exhilarating.

People believed they were finally becoming fully alive.

But underneath the liberation another feeling slowly appeared: restlessness.

The Softer Weapon

People usually imagine control as something obvious.

Police. Censorship. Threats. Prisons. Visible force.

But most human beings are not conquered that way.

They are conquered through ego.

Krylov understood this perfectly in The Crow and the Fox. The fox does not threaten the crow. She flatters her. She tells the crow she is beautiful, gifted, exceptional. The crow, intoxicated by the reflection of herself, opens her mouth and drops the cheese willingly.

That is the important part: willingly.

The mechanism is ancient.

People become defensive when attacked. They become suggestible when admired.

Vanity lowers defenses more effectively than coercion.

Modern systems understand this instinctively.

The clever system no longer says:

obey.

The Necessary Devil

There is a tension running through civilization that never disappears.

On one side stands order: limits, continuity, obedience, moral restraint, the attempt to stabilize life against chaos and excess.

On the other side stands something more dangerous: ambition, restlessness, curiosity, creative aggression, the refusal to remain within inherited boundaries.

Civilization itself seems to emerge from the unstable interaction between these forces.

Without order, societies disintegrate. Without transgression, they stagnate.

This tension appears repeatedly in Western mythology. Prometheus steals fire from the gods. Lucifer rebels against heaven. Faust reaches beyond permitted knowledge. Icarus flies too close to the sun.

These are not merely stories about evil. They are recognitions that the same force capable of elevating humanity is also capable of destroying it.

The fire-bringer is always dangerous.

And yet without such figures, civilization itself would likely never have advanced beyond survival.

Apocalypse in Switzerland

A man in Zurich recently discovered that his Migros supermarket sandwich weighed 14 grams less than indicated on the packaging. Not once, but repeatedly. According to reports, he bought and weighed the sandwich around ten separate times.

This is Switzerland, so naturally the story became national news.

Not war. Not economic collapse. Not political unrest.

Sandwich discrepancies.

The reactions were immediate and emotionally devastating.

“Migros is not what it used to be.” “This should never happen.” “Measures must be taken.”

At least one person was spiritually three comments away from declaring a federal state of emergency.

And honestly, this may be the most Swiss story ever told.

The Managed Life

There is a version of life that works.

It runs on time. It eats well. It doesn’t overreach. It keeps its impulses contained and its moods within acceptable range. Nothing spills. Nothing derails. It is calm, efficient, respectable.

From the outside, it looks like success.

From the inside, something slowly disappears.

Not dramatically. Nothing breaks. There is no crisis to point at, no obvious wound. Just a gradual thinning of experience. The world loses its gravity. Things that once carried weight now pass by almost frictionless. Attraction becomes observation. Hunger becomes routine. Desire becomes manageable.

Everything is fine.

That is the problem.

Moralized Epistemology

I recently read a sentence by the German labor minister:

“Nobody immigrates into our social welfare systems.”

What struck me about the sentence was not primarily whether it was technically true or false. Reality is obviously more complicated than that. Some migrants come for work, some for safety, some for family, some for opportunity, and yes, some are undoubtedly influenced by welfare structures and economic security. Anyone who has worked in the social sector understands this instinctively.

But the interesting thing is not the migration debate itself.

The interesting thing is the epistemology underneath the sentence.

Against Dead Morality

William Blake was not simply a poet or painter. He was one of the earliest and most radical critics of moral systems that, in his view, had quietly turned against life itself.

Born in London in 1757, Blake was deeply spiritual yet profoundly suspicious of organized religion. He believed Christianity had gradually hardened into something cold and administrative, a structure concerned less with awakening the soul than with managing behavior through guilt, fear, and obedience. What disturbed him was not morality itself, but morality detached from vitality.

Blake saw an inversion at the center of the society around him. The forces that make human beings feel intensely alive — imagination, sexuality, anger, ambition, desire, creative energy were increasingly treated as dangerous things to suppress. Meanwhile obedience, restraint, conformity, and passive submission were elevated into virtues. To Blake, this did not produce holiness. It produced psychological distortion.

One of his deepest insights was that repression does not eliminate human impulses. It transforms them. Suppressed drives return indirectly as hypocrisy, fanaticism, voyeurism, cruelty, obsession, secret vice, or displaced aggression. This is the meaning behind one of his most famous lines which are something like: “Prisons are built with stones of Law, Brothels with bricks of Religion.”

Running Out of Ideas

There was something clean about The Devil Wears Prada.

Not because of fashion. Not because of New York. But because it still believed in a line you could cross and then step back from. A young woman enters a world she doesn’t belong to. She adapts. She sharpens. She becomes efficient, impressive, almost indistinguishable from the system she once observed from the outside.

And then something simple happens.

She notices the cost.

Not in slogans. Not in speeches. In a quiet internal shift. A recognition that competence can become submission. That fitting in can mean dissolving. That success, if it requires the wrong kind of transformation, is just another form of loss.

So she walks away.

That was the point. Not rebellion, not triumph. A line held.

The film worked because it assumed something that now feels almost antique: that a person might have an internal reference point. A sense of self that does not fully negotiate with the environment. A limit beyond which adaptation becomes betrayal.

That assumption carried the story.

Now look at what comes after.

The Devil Wears Compassion Now

“First of all, my dear friend, I think we should calm down a little with the word ‘evil.’ It’s a very medieval framing.

I don’t really make people do things anymore. That model is outdated. Too crude. Too obvious. Fire, possession, sulfur, spinning heads. Honestly, it gave me terrible branding.

No, today I work much more delicately.

I adjust interpretation.

That’s all.

A little shift of emphasis here, a small reframing there, tiny calibrations.

Someone gets ignored at work. I help them interpret it as systemic humiliation.

A failed relationship becomes proof that intimacy itself is exploitation.

Loneliness becomes superiority.

Confusion becomes identity.

Weakness becomes ideology.

Resentment becomes moral insight.

You would be amazed how little force is required once people begin narrating themselves incorrectly in exactly the right way.

After that, they do the rest alone.

The Missing Key

I spent nearly an hour looking for a motorcycle key.

I searched the apartment, the hallway, outside the house, every jacket, every table, every surface. Gradually the search stopped being practical and became psychological. Not just: “Where is the key?” but: “What did I do wrong?”

That is usually where the mind goes.

We assume the explanation must lie somewhere inside our own visible chain of actions.

Where was I? What did I touch? Did I forget something? Did I leave it outside? Was I distracted?

The brain begins constructing a closed narrative system. A private detective story in which we ourselves become both suspect and investigator.

The strange thing is that the frame feels complete precisely because it is the only one we can see from inside our own head.

Even when we try to step back and observe ourselves from a meta-perspective, the focus usually remains trapped inside the same circle:

my decisions, my mistakes, my motives, my responsibility.

We become highly sophisticated observers of ourselves while remaining largely blind to everything operating outside our field of awareness.

Then my twelve-year-old daughter came home.

Spiritual Bureaucracy

One of the strangest transformations in Western history is the distance between the world of the Gospels and the atmosphere of modern Christianity.

The New Testament is full of unstable energy.

Deserts.

Visions.

Mad prophets.

Demons.

Mystics.

Fishermen abandoning their lives overnight.

Men hearing voices.

A God who appears in dreams.

A Messiah wandering from town to town saying things radical enough to get himself executed by the state.

The whole thing feels dangerous.

Superficial Diversity

Modern institutions speak endlessly about diversity.

Diversity of backgrounds. Diversity of identities. Diversity of expression. Diversity of lifestyles. Diversity of perspectives.

The posters are diverse. The brochures are diverse. The websites are diverse. Every annual report looks like a United Nations commercial directed by a human resources department.

And yet many people quietly notice something strange:

The more an institution talks about diversity, the narrower the acceptable human range underneath often becomes.

Not externally.

Internally.

Psychological Gym Membership

There was a time when therapy meant something had actually gone wrong.

A divorce. Panic attacks. Depression. Trauma. Addiction. The kind of things that make a person stare at the ceiling at three in the morning wondering how reality quietly slipped out of alignment.

Now therapy increasingly resembles a boutique lifestyle subscription somewhere between Pilates and artisanal coffee.

People no longer whisper:

“I’m in therapy.”

They announce it with the calm pride of somebody saying:

“I’ve started reformer Pilates.”

Interrupting the Drift

There’s a way people talk about Atomic Habits that never quite lands.

As if it’s a philosophy of life.

It isn’t.

Or at least, that’s not where it earns its keep.

Taken as a worldview, it’s thin. Life is not a sequence of optimized micro-actions. Meaning doesn’t emerge from brushing your teeth 1% better. The deeper questions don’t bend to habit design. You can structure behavior, but you don’t resolve existence that way.

But that doesn’t make the book weak.

It just means it’s being used in the wrong domain.

Where it actually works is much narrower. And much more practical.

It’s a cleanup strategy.

Accidental World Power

The strange thing about power is that sometimes the people who possess it do not fully understand it until somebody else accidentally explains it to them.

For decades, the world liked its power structure clean and cinematic.

America. China. Russia.

Maybe India waiting politely in the lobby while the adults talked.

The usual superpower menu.

Aircraft carriers. Nuclear weapons. Massive GDP charts. Satellites. Intelligence agencies with names sounding like villains in airport thrillers.

Then reality once again behaved disrespectfully toward theory.

Because the world suddenly remembered that an absurd amount of industrial civilization squeezes itself through a narrow strip of water called the Strait of Hormuz.

And Iran, sitting there like a man holding a wrench next to the main water valve of the apartment building, quietly realized:

“Wait a second. If we turn this thing sideways, the whole world starts screaming.”

That is the birth of the accidental world power.

Back to Reality

For a long time, the West behaved as if history had quietly ended.

Borders became psychological rather than physical. Energy was assumed to be permanent. Demography became an abstraction instead of destiny. Politics turned therapeutic. Every tension was treated as a communication problem, every structural limit as something that could eventually be negotiated away through the correct language, sufficient empathy, and administrative management.

Reality itself began to feel optional.

And because daily life still worked, because supermarkets remained full, pensions still arrived, flights still departed on time, people mistook stability for inevitability.

But stability is not inevitability.

It is maintenance.

It is energy flows, birth rates, functioning infrastructure, trust, institutional competence, social cohesion, and millions of people quietly carrying systems every single day without applause.

Modern Europe slowly drifted into a posthistorical dream state.

The Refusal to Grow Up

There is something strangely adolescent about modern elite culture.

Not youthful in the good sense. Not adventurous, energetic, exploratory, alive. Not the kind of youth that builds things, risks things, tests itself against reality.

Something softer.

A permanent extension of the emotional logic of late adolescence.

A culture increasingly organized around the belief that discomfort is harm, criticism is violence, identity is destiny, and emotional vulnerability confers moral authority.

That is the psychological core of wokeness.

Not compassion. Not justice. Infantilism.

You see it everywhere once you notice it.

The obsession with emotional safety. The inability to tolerate ambiguity. The expectation that institutions should regulate ordinary human friction. The transformation of disagreement into trauma. The constant appeal to administrators, HR departments, moderators, reporting systems, speech codes, and therapeutic language.

It is the emotional architecture of children calling for the teacher.

And the deeper irony is that this mentality emerged inside the safest and wealthiest societies in human history.

Not among people working on oil rigs, fishing boats, construction sites, farms, or factory floors. Not in places where reality answers quickly and brutally. It emerged inside managerial and academic environments where physical hardship has largely disappeared and psychological interpretation becomes the primary battlefield.

That matters.

Because human beings do not simply become peaceful once material survival is secured. The energy moves elsewhere.

Atlas Logging Off

There is a quiet bitterness spreading through parts of modern society. Not revolutionary bitterness. Not mobs in the streets. More like exhaustion slowly turning into detachment.

People still wake up in the morning.

They still go to work.

They still pay taxes.

They still keep systems running.

The trains still move.

The shelves are still stocked.

The lights still turn on.

The roads still get repaired.

But underneath the functioning surface, something has started to shift.

A growing number of people no longer feel like citizens. They feel like infrastructure.

Load-bearing structures.

Expected, but not appreciated.

Needed, but not respected.

Germany; The Stranded Whale

Is this still reality, or has it already slipped into parody?

A whale strands itself on the German coast. A sick animal in the wrong water. Sad, unusual, but understandable. What becomes harder to understand is everything that follows.

Within days, a single animal turns into a national psychodrama. Not a short report. Not an evening headline. An ongoing spectacle. Live tickers. Camera crews. Endless updates. Emotional commentary delivered with the gravity of a state crisis. The whale becomes the main character.

You look at it and wonder whether modern societies have lost the ability to scale emotion proportionally to reality.

There are fences. Not really to protect the whale, but to contain the public performance orbiting around it. People rush into the water. People take boats out. People cry. People desperately want contact with the animal. Not necessarily to help. To participate. That distinction matters.

Then the teams appear. Naturally.

“Team Hope.”

Interpunctuation

Conflicts rarely begin where people say they begin.

Ask two sides to tell the same story and you won’t get two versions of the facts. You’ll get two versions of where the facts start. Fix that starting point, and everything else falls into place. Motives align. Roles settle. One side reacts, the other initiates. The script writes itself.

Watzlawick called this interpunctuation. Not the events themselves, but the way we carve them into a sequence. Where we place the first stone. What we decide counts as the beginning.

In the Ukraine conflict, the split is not only political. It is grammatical.

What Is Truth?

There’s a moment in the Gospel where Pilate asks a question that should stop the world.

“What is truth?”

He doesn’t wait for an answer.

That’s the detail that matters. The question isn’t asked in hunger. It’s asked in fatigue. Pilate has a problem to solve. A man in front of him, a crowd outside, a situation that needs to be managed. Truth is not useful to him. It doesn’t help him decide. It doesn’t stabilize anything.

It looks like skepticism. It feels modern. It sounds like the end of something.

But it isn’t doubt that speaks there. It’s exhaustion. A man who has already decided that whatever truth is, it will not carry the weight of the moment.

And in that gesture, something closes.

Or seems to.

Because philosophy begins in the same place, but with a different posture.

Pulp Scripture

Recently, Pete Hegseth stood at the Pentagon and delivered a prayer. He reached for the Bible. Or something that sounded like it had already been improved. Ezekiel 25:17. Serious face. Institutional gravity. The whole setting calibrated for weight.

What came out wasn’t Ezekiel.

It was the version that works.

Not better in truth. Better in delivery. Sharper edges. Clean structure. A line that doesn’t just sit there but carries itself, like it knows it’s being watched.

You could call it a mistake. That would be generous. It would suggest there’s still a line between text and performance, and that sometimes people accidentally cross it.

But nothing accidental happened.

This is what happens when a culture stops reading texts and starts staging them.

Running a Dialectic on Yourself

There is a phase in life where everything is outward.

You try things. You move. You test limits. You go places not because they matter, but because they are there. The point is not coherence. The point is exposure.

Then something shifts.

You don’t stop moving, but the movement changes direction. It turns inward. What was once experience becomes material. Something you now have to account for.

In my case, the last twelve years did that work.

Marriage. A child. Study. Responsibility. And alongside that, pressure. Not abstract pressure, but the kind that comes from living close to instability. When someone near you is not stable, and does not anchor themselves, you are forced into a strange position. You either numb yourself or you sharpen yourself. There is no neutral.

But it would be too easy to leave it there. As if pressure only came from the outside.

It didn’t.

When the Madman Stops Being a Strategy

There is a familiar idea in politics: play the madman.

Act unpredictable. Blur intention. Make the other side hesitate because they cannot model you.

It works. But only under one condition.

You have to be able to stop.

The madness must be reversible. A role you step into and out of. A tool, not a state.

For years, Donald Trump operated in that ambiguity. People argued about him, and the argument itself became part of the effect. Is he reckless or calculating? Improvising or strategic? The uncertainty did the work. It created space. It created leverage.

But something has shifted.

Be steady. No wobbling. No visible doubt. If something shakes you, absorb it. Process it offstage. Come back composed.

Be sexual, but not needy.

Available, but not dependent.

Confident, but not aggressive.

Desire without awkwardness. Presence without pressure. A balance with no instructions.

Handle it yourself.

Don’t complain.

Feeling Alive at the End

There is a strange thought some people have, and most won’t admit it out loud. The world ends. Everything collapses. And somehow, in that collapse, they imagine themselves more alive than ever. It sounds perverse. It is. But it reveals something.

Modern life rarely feels like life. It feels like management. Schedules, obligations, soft constraints everywhere. Nothing is clearly at stake. Nothing is clearly decided. You move, but you don’t feel movement. You act, but the consequences dissolve before they reach you. Life becomes a sequence of low-intensity adjustments. Nothing is really wrong. Things function. Work, routine, structure. But nothing demands you. No moment forces something out of you. No situation where you are fully required. And then the same people talk about collapse. Apocalypse films. System failure. What they would do if everything broke down. And suddenly there is energy.

The apocalyptic imagination cuts through the flatness.

The Despair You Are

There is a kind of despair that announces itself.

It breaks routines. It disturbs sleep. It forces questions. You feel it as pressure, as unrest, as something that does not let you go. It is unpleasant, but it has one advantage: it is visible. It makes a claim.

Then there is the other kind.

It does not interrupt. It does not shout. It fits into your day.

You wake up, you move through your tasks, you speak to people, you respond, you function. Nothing is dramatically wrong. From the outside, everything holds together. From the inside, nothing demands attention.

This is not despair you have.

This is despair you are.

Playing Golf with Pharaoh

I was watching one of Rick Roderick’s lectures again. Everyone should see them. Even if you’re not into philosophy. He was one of the sharpest social critics out there. Funny, precise, and uncomfortable in the right way. The strange thing is how little they’ve aged. These lectures are from the 1990s. They could have been recorded yesterday.

At one point, he offers an image that sticks.

In the past, he says, they fought Pharaoh.

Today, they play golf with him.

Exaggerated. But it lands.

Once, the role was clear. The biblical model leaves no ambiguity. Moses stands before Pharaoh and says no. He confronts power. He leads people out of bondage.

That was the job.

Stand outside power.

Oppose it.

Break it.

Today, the role looks different.

The Real Count of Monte Cristo

We were talking about The Count of Monte Cristo in my car.

Not casually. Properly. The way you only can when someone has actually read the book and not just followed the plot. My 12 year old daughter knows it inside out. Not the summary. The structure.

She asked me who I identify with.

I’ve never really thought about it. I’m not the cold revenge type, so not Edmond Dantès.

If anything, Abbé Faria. The old priest in the Château d’If. The man who turns a prison into a school.The one who understands that even when everything is taken from you, you still have your mind. That’s a philosophy I understand. Not heroic. Not dramatic. Just quiet, stubborn work.

Then I asked my daughter the same question.

Who do you identify with?

Ketchup on Fries

You can hear it if you listen for it.

Not what they say. How they say it.

Rick Roderick once described American politics in a way that sticks. You take your statement, whatever it is, and you dip it. A little Jesus. A little God. Not too much. Just enough to coat it. Like ketchup on fries. It doesn’t change the fries. It makes them acceptable.

The point wasn’t religion. It was packaging.

The statement underneath could be anything. War. Tax cuts. Surveillance. It doesn’t matter. The coating does the work. It signals belonging. It tells the listener this is safe, this is ours, this fits into the moral language you already trust.

Europe doesn’t do Jesus the same way. The instinct is still there.

Now the coating has changed.

Selective Transparency

In Germany, the argument arrives dressed as hygiene.

Online anonymity is treated as dirt. It breeds insults, manipulation, irresponsibility. Attach a name, and speech supposedly cleans itself. People behave. The room improves.

There is truth in that.

A name creates cost. You hesitate before speaking. You measure. You anticipate consequences. Reputation enters the equation. The system gains friction, and friction filters noise.

So far, fine.

What is false is the pretense that this principle applies equally.

Because it does not.

Jesus With a Six-Pack

A tabloid runs a piece asking why Jesus Christ looks so well-trained on the cross.

That’s the entry point.

Not theology. Not history. Body fat percentage.

It sounds like satire, but it isn’t. It’s perfectly serious in the way the system is serious. The image is taken, reframed, and pushed through a logic everyone already understands: fitness, optimization, visible results.

The crucifix becomes a physique question.

And that’s enough to stop you for a second.

Not because it’s offensive. Because it’s revealing.
