The Devil Wears Compassion Now
“First of all, my dear friend, I think we should calm down a little with the word ‘evil.’ It’s a very medieval framing.
I don’t really make people do things anymore. That model is outdated. Too crude. Too obvious. Fire, possession, sulfur, spinning heads. Honestly, it gave me terrible branding.
No, today I work much more delicately.
I adjust interpretation.
That’s all.
A little shift of emphasis here, a small reframing there, tiny calibrations.
Someone gets ignored at work. I help them interpret it as systemic humiliation.
A failed relationship becomes proof that intimacy itself is exploitation.
Loneliness becomes superiority.
Confusion becomes identity.
Weakness becomes ideology.
Resentment becomes moral insight.
You would be amazed how little force is required once people begin narrating themselves incorrectly in exactly the right way.
After that, they do the rest alone.
And honestly, I barely need to lie anymore.
Modern people arrive already fragmented. Exhausted. Narcissistically wounded. Addicted to visibility while simultaneously terrified of judgment. They voluntarily carry surveillance devices in their pockets and then wonder why they feel anxious all the time.
Most of my work today consists merely in helping them avoid silence long enough that they never encounter themselves directly.
Endless sitting in front of screens helps enormously.
Outrage helps too.
Outrage is one of my finest innovations because it allows people to experience moral exhilaration without requiring self-examination.
They feel righteous while remaining completely unchanged.
A beautiful system.
And before someone accuses me of spreading ‘misinformation,’ let me clarify something:
Truth is rarely the problem.
Selection is the problem.
I do not require lies. I merely isolate fragments.
A statistic without context. A resentment without proportion. An injustice without scale. A memory without forgiveness.
Human beings complete the distortion themselves.
Psychologically speaking, they are an extraordinarily efficient species.
The old religions at least understood temptation.
Modern people think temptation means pleasure.
Amateurs.
The real temptations are: self-pity, moral vanity, resentment, identity through victimhood, the pleasure of permanent accusation.
These things endure.
Lust burns quickly. Pride scales infinitely.
And if I may say something slightly uncomfortable:
My greatest achievement was probably convincing modern people that manipulation must always look authoritarian.
They still imagine evil as marching boots and censorship.
Meanwhile the elegant systems operate through nudging, optimization, social incentives, algorithmic visibility, therapeutic language, and managed consensus.
Nobody feels controlled because everybody feels included.
A marvelous development.
But what am I most proud of?
Probably this:
I taught people to confuse self-expression with self-knowledge.
Now they narrate themselves endlessly while understanding themselves less and less.
They display everything. They confess everything. They transform every emotion into public identity.
And beneath all that visibility sits a terrifying emptiness they can no longer face quietly.
That is where I live now.
Not in Hell.
But in permanent distraction from the possibility of truth.
Because evil no longer needs to possess you.
It is enough if it helps you interpret everything as being about yourself.”
