How Much Self-Critique Can a Culture Sustain Before It Undermines Itself

Systematic self-critique is historically rare.
Most civilizations preserve. They justify. They remember what was done to them, not what they have done. They may reform under pressure, but they do not habitually place their own foundations under moral examination.
The sustained practice of turning standards inward, of interrogating one’s own history, power structures, and moral claims as a routine cultural activity, emerged gradually in the West.
Its early forms appear in classical Athens, where tragedy and philosophy questioned civic virtue and the gods. It deepened in Roman law, which formalized limits on power. It became metaphysical in Christian theology, where sin was internalized and confession institutionalized moral self-examination. It was radicalized during the Reformation, when religious authority itself was challenged from within. It became methodological in the Enlightenment, when reason was turned against tradition, monarchy, and church. And it was universalized in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when critique extended to empire, race, capitalism, gender, and the civilizational project itself.
In scale and continuity, this pattern is unusual.
